Yes, it's very safe compared to Mexico (I have lived in both Mexico and Canada). Canada is also generally safer than the United States.
Ultimately it depends on where you go though. There are still "rough" areas in Canada that are poorer and have higher crime rates (relative to other areas), but generally speaking Canada is a very safe country.
Most people in Canada are not afraid to walk around at night (especially if they're walking with someone else). Also, many Canadians do not lock their doors even at night because they don't really feel like there is a risk of getting robbed (this depends on the city/area though).
Note: you cannot own a firearm (gun) for self-defence purposes in Canada. It is possible to own certain firearms (mostly long-guns / hunting rifles), but they must be kept unloaded and stored securely (e.g. in a locked safe box) and the ammunition must be stored separately.
Basically, with few exceptions, it is illegal to possess/use a firearm for self-defence purposes (against humans) in Canada. So-called "tasers" and "stun-guns" are also prohibited along with mace/pepper spray and certain types of knives.

@Gerry8a: Very safe :) especially for men (as it seems to be all over the world). But Canada is very big, and while 99% of it is very safe, be sure to ask about where you are going specifically.

Depends on where you are. Things change wherever you go. Some cities are very safe, and some are pretty dangerous. Big cities like Toronto and Hamilton can be pretty dangerous; but some cities, even ones close to Toronto, can be very safe, like Burlington.
